Veins are fairly frail structures.  Defects in the vein wall lead to dilation of the vein and damage to the valves inside the vein that allow blood to flow back to the heart.  When the valves become damaged, blood accumulates in the veins and static pressure increases, resulting in the bulging veins known as varicose veins....
