HAY FEVER

Hay fever, known as “allergic rhinitis,” affects mucous membranes of the nose, eyes, and air passages.  Dust, pollen, feathers, and animal hair are often the offending agents.  Symptoms include itchy eyes, watery discharge from the nose and eyes, sneezing, and nervousness....

Hay fever sufferers often also suffer from asthma and dermatitis.  Symptoms are often seasonal and associated with grass pollens in the spring and tree pollens in the autumn.  Symptoms can also be present year-round.

Some labs provide RAST testing which measure IgE blood levels, an immunoglobulin often elevated in response to a perceived foreign agent in the body.  This can be helpful in identifying the offending allergen.

Royal Recommendations for Prevention and Treatment

1.      Supplement with antioxidants such as vitamins A, E, C, and Bioflavonoids, zinc, and B-complex.  You may want to take your maximum bowel tolerance of vitamin C, which has been found to be beneficial to the immune system against allergic reactions.  This is done by gradually increasing the amount of vitamin C until loose bowels is achieved.  Maintain at or just below this dosage divided throughout the day.

2.      In general, eat as close to nature as possible and avoid foods that tend to be associated with food allergies, such as dairy products, chocolate, caffeine, white flour products, and refined sugars (e.g., as cakes, pies, and junk foods).  (See “Allergy--Foods.”)

3.      Minimize your exposure to dust mites, animal dander, and molds.  Using a dehumidifier (if you live in an area with high air moisture content), and air-conditioning your home can help for this purpose.  Be sure to change the air filters in your home from time to time.  (See “Asthma.”)

4.      Sealing your mattress and pillows in plastic and washing your bed linen in hot water are other ways to keep the dust mite count to a minimum.

5.      Install an air purifier, such as an ozone generator, which produces the same amount of ozone in your home that occurs naturally outside, at about 0.03 ppm.  This will clean the air in just about any environment.

6.      Botanical medicines known to have usefulness in the treatment of hay fever are Ephedra, Chinese skullcap, and Licorice root, and Angelica.  Ephedra should be taken in combination with nutrients that support the adrenal glands such as adrenal glandular, vitamin C, magnesium, zinc, and vitamins B5 and B6.  Chinese skullcap is high in flavonoids, potent antioxidants, which are able to inhibit compounds over 1000 times more potent than histamine.  Licorice root increases the half-life of cortisol in the body resulting in prolonged anti-inflammatory action of this hormone.  Angelica inhibits the production of IgE antibodies that are often elevated 3-10 times greater in patients with allergic conditions.  (See “Stress.”)

7.      Homeopathics such as:  Allium Cepa (for clear discharge with intense itching of the eyes and nose); Euphrasia (for watery eyes that are inflamed); Sabadilla (for profuse discharge, sneezing, and frontal headache); Kali Carbonica (for severe symptoms with yellowish discharge which are worse in the morning and the evening and better in the open air); and Mixed Pollen (a combination of homeopathically-prepared allergens which can not only neutralize symptoms but desensitize the patient to the offending agents as well).  The Royal Remedy combination, Allergy Relief, is particularly designed to combat symptoms associated with allergic reactions common to hay fever sufferers.
