CANDIDIASIS
Candida albicans is a yeast-like fungus that is found in every individual. When we speak of a “yeast infection,” we are usually referring to “Candida albicans.” Normally this fungus lives in healthy balance with the other bacteria and yeast in the intestines, mouth, and genital tract. However, certain conditions can cause this fungus to multiply, weakening the immune system and causing the infection known as “candidiasis.” Almost every woman will have a yeast infection at some time or another. This is particularly common during pregnancy, when the acidity and sugar content of a woman’s vaginal secretions are altered. Because this fungus can travel in the bloodstream to many parts of the body, various symptoms may develop....
The most common areas of Candida infection are the ears, nose, mouth, vagina, and bowels. Symptoms include fatigue, digestive disturbances (such as bloating, excess gas, intestinal cramps, rectal itching, constipation or diarrhea, and heartburn), canker sores, acne, muscle and joint pain, arthritis, vaginal itching and discharge, menstrual complaints, bladder infections, and depression. Oral thrush, athlete’s foot, ringworm, jock itch, psoriasis, and even diaper rash can also develop as a result of Candida albicans overgrowth. In vaginal candidiasis, the skin around the vagina may even become sore and appear red.
Oral contraceptives, spermicides, chemical douches, synthetic hormones for menopause, or having intercourse with someone who already has a yeast infection can also lead to the development of a yeast infection. Fungi thrive in the presence of sugar, causing diabetics to be more susceptible to yeast infections. In addition, antibiotics generally upset the vaginal and/or intestinal environment of those using them, and may result in a yeast infection.
Candida blood antibody levels are available from some labs and, if candidiasis is suspected, an antibody titer should be obtained and followed over time to monitor your progress.
Royal Recommendations for Prevention and Treatment
- Avoid steroid medication, frequent antibiotics, anti-ulcer drugs and oral birth control pills. These are all known to increase the growth of Candida.
- If taking an anti-fungal medication, such as Nystatin, Ketoconazole, or Terazole, use it for short-term relief. However, long-term antifungal treatment, like antibiotics, can weaken the immune system and disturb the flora balance of the intestines.
- Have your allergies checked. (See “Allergy--Foods.”) Allergies can contribute to Candida overgrowth. Some patients become overly sensitivity to their environment. Many cannot tolerate smells such as tobacco, exhaust fumes, and chemical odors. The body’s response to allergies, especially food sensitivities, increases adrenal hormone output and results in hypoglycemia (or low blood sugar), weakness, tremors, headaches, confusion, cold sweats and food cravings.
- Reduce your intake of refined foods and processed foods (e.g., white sugar, white flour). Avoid fermented foods (e.g., cheeses and alcohol), sweets, chocolate, gluten products (e.g., wheat), citrus and acid fruits (e.g., oranges and tomatoes), mushrooms, high carbohydrate foods (e.g., potatoes and corn), dairy products (except homemade yogurt), and all yeast products.
- Homemade yogurt is an excellent source of lactobacillus acidophilus. This is normally present in the bowel and vagina and appears to have an antagonistic effect on Candida.
- Add fiber to your diet, such as oat bran or pure psyllium husk. (See “Constipation.”)
- If vaginal candidiasis is present, acidophilus capsules, fresh garlic, or apple cider vinegar may all be used as effective douches. Keep the vagina clean and dry. Use cotton underwear and avoid tight-fitting clothing. Avoid perfumes, powders, spermicides, and even colored toilet paper. Avoid sex or have your partner use a condom when yeast infection is present. Cotton tampons during the day and cotton pads at night will help absorb excess drainage.
- Apply vitamin E, homeopathic urtica urens or cantharis ointment to irritated skin areas.
- Rule out heavy metal toxicity. Candida is often a secondary problem. For example, mercury from amalgam fillings destroys good bacteria and allows Candida to overgrow. Any heavy metal in excess can interfere with the body’s liver and immune functions. This includes environmental pollutants such as lead, cadmium, and aluminum. (See “Chelation Therapy.”)
- Supplements of vitamins A, C, E, B-complex, vitamin B12, zinc, chromium, and essential fatty acids are all needed by the body to combat infections, reduce stress, and aid in healing. The antioxidants--vitamins A, C, E, and minerals such as selenium, magnesium, and zinc--are particularly helpful. A potent acidophilus (preferably a liquid concentration made directly from the laboratory broth), will help to replenish the normal, symbiotic flora that should exist in the human intestine and thereby “tip the scales” in your favor. Attempt to increase oxygen levels with a stabilized oxygen source such as Aerobic 07. Garlic, Caprylic acid, and Citricidal are all known to destroy and inhibit growth of Candida. Supporting digestion with hydrochloric acid tablets and digestive enzymes may help to minimize food reactions and improve absorption.
- Herbs with anti-Candida activity are: barberry, goldenseal, kombucha, and pau d’arco.
- Homeopathic anti-fungal combinations or a homeopathic dilution of Candida albicans itself may be helpful. Take in a low to medium potency (3X, 6X, 12X, or 30X), 10 drops or 6-10 pellets or 1-2 tablets, several times daily until improvement is noted. Other remedies include: Arsenicum (for burning associated with discharges), Calcarea Sulphurica (occurs naturally in the liver and has a cleansing and purifying effect throughout the system), Calendula (for its healing properties), Echinacea (for its antibiotic properties), Hepar Sulphuris (for general cleansing if infection is active), Mercurius Solubilis (if amalgam toxicity is suspected), Pulsatilla (effective for women aggravated by heat and have no thirst), Sulphur (especially if a “burning sensation” is present), and Zincum Metallicum (for inability to concentrate).
